GitHub Goes Fully Remote

Astoundingly, GitHub goes fully remote. GitHub became the latest company to announce significant redundancies. The sad 2023 trend for mass layoffs in the technology industry is showing no signs of slowing down.

10% of the company’s about 3,000 employees are projected to be impacted by the revelation. Hundreds of people may lose their employment.

A significant portion of employees has preferred increased flexibility since receiving the WFH mandate almost three years ago. And they will be attracted by the company’s plans to close all of its physical offices and operate entirely remotely. Which was one of several cost-cutting measures announced by GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke.

Dohmke noted that the platform is now home to 100 million developers in an email to staff members. And many of them make excellent use of the AI-powered Copilot. This ended up being the company’s most successful launch.

In addition to the ongoing hiring freeze, affected employees can anticipate notification throughout FY23. Some notifications may be coming soon and some coming later.

Although the precise parting gift from the corporation to its employees has not been made public, we do know that they will receive transition perks including extended health insurance and salary.

Other cost-cutting initiatives include extending the time between laptop replacements from three to four years and reducing Microsoft Teams subscriptions to just those needed for video conferencing (Slack will still serve for other communication purposes).

Outside the confines of GitHub, the similarly titled GitLab has also disclosed a 7% reduction in its headcount due to the challenging macroeconomic environment.
