The speaker is the federal representative for Lagos State’s Surulere 1 Federal Constituency, where the opposition Labour Party dramatically defeated the incumbent All Progressives Congress.

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the APC’s presidential candidate and generally regarded master of Lagos politics was defeated by Peter Obi of the LP.

At the elections held on Saturday, a number of APC candidates for the Senate and the House also fell short of their LP rivals.
