Alani Akinrinade: Obasanjo’s call condemnable. General Alani Akinrinade, a former Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Staff, has criticized former President Olusegun Obasanjo for calling for the cancellation of the elections.
The latest statement by Obasanjo regarding the just-concluded elections, according to Akinrinade, must be strongly denounced by Nigerians who value democracy and who care about maintaining the nation’s unity.
According to The PUNCH, Obasanjo claimed that the results of the presidential election held on Saturday had been “doctored and twisted.”
In a statement on Monday, the former president urged President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (ret.) to request a review of the results collation procedure.
The former Army commander responded further by saying, “His (Obasanjo’s) statement coming at a time when the Independent National Electoral Commission was still busy with the conduct and release of the election results, is both sad and an obvious and calculated attempt to cheat the system. A previous president is questioning the validity of a national election and demanding for its cancellation midway without providing a scrap of supporting documentation.
