WHAT IS ACNE?

Acne is one of the most common skin problems that affect people at some point in their lives. It happens when hair follicles are clogged with oil or dead skin cells. It usually occurs during adolescence and young adulthood but can also go into the 20s and 30s.

The truth about acne: causes

  • Hormones: An increase in the number of sex hormones at puberty can lead to an increase in the outbreak of acne. Hormonal changes due to pregnancy can also cause acne.
  • Heredity: You might be more likely to have acne if your parents had it.
  • Bacteria: Large amounts of bacteria living on your skin can clog pores and result in pimples. They also act on the sebum, resulting in irritation and inflammation.

Other causes include stress, diet, scrubbing your skin too hard, and environmental irritation.

The truth about acne: treatment

There is no overnight remedy for acne. Treatment will be used for weeks or months to have an effect.

  1. Use of antibiotics. This can reduce the number of bacteria on the skin and in the pores. Examples include erythromycin and metronidazole.

  2. Hormone pills. It should be taken only on a prescription. Males shouldn’t take it, as there may be some side effects.

  3. Retinoids. They act primarily to unblock pores. Taking vitamin A orally doesn’t have the same effect.

Other methods of treatment include the use of steroids, lasers, or chemical peels. These methods are more complicated and can only be carried out by a dermatologist.

In conclusion, Acne takes about one to two weeks to clear up on its own. You can speed it up with medicated treatments and a good skin-care routine. Also, know that the skincare products that work for you might not work for someone else. Seek help if you feel your acne is getting severe.
